Living the Natural Life – Vitamins and Antioxidants

Moving from convenience food to fresh foods will inevitably mean that you will be spending more time in the kitchen, but what price will you put on your own and your family’s long term health?  Are you willing to include more vitamins and antioxidants in your diet.

Will it be worth it – of course it will!

Now, let’s explore a little bit further.

You could purchase a good natural supplement to keep your body healthy through the change from convenience to natural foods.

A lot of the supermarket convenience foods are easy to prepare and cook. They are usually processed tins and packets, so you just need to open the packet or tin and pop into the microwave, give it a quick ‘nuke’ and hey presto – dinner’s ready. That’s OK if your only aim is to fill the stomachs of your family and yourself. But have you given any thought as to why these convenience foods are able to have such a long sell by date? They will keep for an un-naturally long time either in the cupboard or in the fridge without deteriorating because they are so deficient in living ingredients and so full of preservatives. Can Vitamins Improve Your Sperm Count?

Today, more than ever, there seems to be an increase in infertility in men. Not because they are completely sterile but because the sperm count is low and the motility of the sperm is not good.

Is there anything that can be done to improve sperm count and motility?

It has been suggested that improving your overall will help to increase sperm count as will reducing any stress in your life. Stress is proven to reduce sperm count by having a negative effect on the production of sperm which obviously, reduces the sperm count.

Try using a zinc supplement to help increase the viability and motility of the live sperm. As zinc should be present in semen, it follows that there should be sufficient zinc in the body to encourage the health of the sperm. Read the rest of this entry »

Omega-3 Fatty Acids – More Than Cardiovascular Protection

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been known to protect the cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke, lowering blood pressure and even improve cholesterol levels.  That’s a lot of power in one little group of micro-nutrients as it is but science has turned up evidence that the larger benefit from this group of fatty acids could be as a brain boosting super nutrient.

Omega-3s are called essential fatty acids because while they are necessary for optimal health, the body is incapable of producing them.  Therefore, they must be obtained from what we eat.  Foods that are the richest sources of these fats include certain fish like salmon, sardines and herring, as well as walnuts, flaxseed and canola oil.  Other sources, while not as packed with the fats are still good sources and that includes shrimp, clams, cod and spinach.

Three main compounds make up the Omega-3 fats: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).  Since ALA actually is converted into the other two compounds in the body, the most important to watch for would be DHA and EPA.  Those two are more readily utilized by the body.

Studies have been done with giving omega-3 supplements during pregnancy and then following the resulting infants until they were four years old.  The children were consistently ahead of their peers who did not receive supplementation in utero.  DHA, in particular, has been shown so beneficial to brain development that baby formula makers are including it in their formulas. What are Antioxidants and Why Should I Care?

If you look at the term antioxidant, you can likely figure out the roots of the word.

Anti meaning against and oxidant referring to oxygen and oxidization – antioxidant.  Wait a minute – against oxygen?  Don’t we need that to survive?  Of course we do as oxygen is a large component of the air we breathe.  However, the way our system is set up, the molecules of our cells become oxidized because of the oxygen intake causing one of the electrons to shake loose from the molecule.  This makes the molecule become unstable and known as a free radical.

The worst thing about this whole situation is that just about everything contributes to this oxidization process so our body’s are pretty much constantly producing more free radicals.  Air pollution, cigarette smoke (yours or someone else’s), alcohol, stress, even sun exposure all contribute to the process.  Thankfully, nature herself has provided a countermeasure for all the damage caused by free radicals – antioxidants.  These handy little nutrient compounds come along and donate a spare electron to the unstable molecule, turning it stable again.

The most amazing thing about antioxidants is that there are so very many of them and more are being discovered every day.  Your body actually produces some antioxidants on its own while the rest need to be consumed through the food we eat.  Some of the everyday vitamins and minerals that we’ve long known are necessary for optimal health turned out to have antioxidant properties like vitamin C and zinc.  More, however, have been discovered as scientists discover  and isolate substances in nutritional compounds.  Things like flavonoids, lutein and resveratrol are all recent discoveries in antioxidant research. Vitamin D Deficiency – A Growing Problem

With all the media attention to the dangers of UV ray exposure in the past two decades, people are avoiding even small amounts of sun exposure.  Of course, with the hectic lives that many of us lead now, many people simply don’t have time to be out enjoying the sunshine as they would have in past times.  Most of us are aware now that UV rays can contribute to premature aging and skin cancer, but many are unaware of the side effect that seems to be rising from the anti-sun crusade: widespread deficiencies in vitamin D.

Severe vitamin D deficiencies can lead to major problems with bones.  Vitamin D acts as a catalyst that helps maintain proper levels of both calcium and phosphorus in the blood.  Both of these minerals are vital to strong, healthy bone tissue.  This isn’t the only thing that vitamin D affects in the body, either.  Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiencies can lead to depression, certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and diabetes.   Is it any wonder that our rates of diabetes keep rising along with the craze to stay out of the sun?  Seems rather a big coincidence.
