Moving from convenience food to fresh foods will inevitably mean that you will be spending more time in the kitchen, but what price will you put on your own and your family’s long term health? Are you willing to include more vitamins and antioxidants in your diet.

Will it be worth it – of course it will!

Now, let’s explore a little bit further.

You could purchase a good natural supplement to keep your body healthy through the change from convenience to natural foods.

A lot of the supermarket convenience foods are easy to prepare and cook. They are usually processed tins and packets, so you just need to open the packet or tin and pop into the microwave, give it a quick ‘nuke’ and hey presto – dinner’s ready. That’s OK if your only aim is to fill the stomachs of your family and yourself. But have you given any thought as to why these convenience foods are able to have such a long sell by date? They will keep for an un-naturally long time either in the cupboard or in the fridge without deteriorating because they are so deficient in living ingredients and so full of preservatives.

Fast foods are extremely popular in today’s frantic lifestyles but have you ever stopped to think about the very first fast foods? No? Well, the very first fast foods were from nature’s own larder. Nature has provided us with all the fast foods we could want in the form of vegetables, fruit, nuts, berries, herbs and spring water etc. Ok, so the hunter gatherer gig is no longer the way to go, but consider how much healthier we would be if we were to return to the diet that nature has provided for us.

Consider dining in nature’s fast food restaurant now and again. Eat a meal that consists of the things that you could go out and gather yourself if you had the time (and inclination) to. Have you ever thought how convenient these fruits and berries, herbs etc are? They are mostly within the reach of an average human, and those that aren’t easily reachable usually drop to the ground when they are ripe and ready to eat. How convenient is that?

If you think it is time to make some changes in the way you eat, here are a few easy things to substitute to make your everyday diet just a little healthier.

Sweet Fruit Yoghurts to Natural Yoghurt with fresh fruit added

Ice Cream to Natural Yoghurt with fresh fruit, frozen

Breakfast Cereals to Porridge Oats

White Bread to Wholemeal Bread

White Pasta to Wholemeal Pasta

Sweet snacks to Vegetable or fruit pieces

All Soda to Fresh fruit juice with added sparkling water

Tea and Coffee to Herbal Teas or decaffeinated tea or coffee

Another great idea is to substitute at least one of your daily meals for raw foods – you can eat as much as you like as well. There are lots of things to choose from like raw bean-sprouts, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot, apples, pears, cucumber, celery, and so on. If you just change your eating habits a little at a time, you will soon begin to notice the benefits and you will begin to feel great!

Today, more than ever, there seems to be an increase in infertility in men. Not because they are completely sterile but because the sperm count is low and the motility of the sperm is not good.

Is there anything that can be done to improve sperm count and motility?

It has been suggested that improving your overall will help to increase sperm count as will reducing any stress in your life. Stress is proven to reduce sperm count by having a negative effect on the production of sperm which obviously, reduces the sperm count.

Try using a zinc supplement to help increase the viability and motility of the live sperm. As zinc should be present in semen, it follows that there should be sufficient zinc in the body to encourage the health of the sperm.

Vitamin B 12, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are all vitamins that could help to improve the sperm count. It has been widely reported that Vitamin E could help to improve fertility in both women and men. Men who are taking part in an IVF program with their partners will be advised to supplement their diet with Vitamin E and the improved fertilization rates suggest that Vitamin E is vital to sexual health.

Try doing some regular exercise. This has also been cited as a way to help improve the sperm count by encouraging the blood to pump harder throughout the body.

For a great range of vitamins check out the Mens Health section at

These days, research about anti-aging products is more widespread than ever. More people want to reduce the signs of aging, and as a result, pharmaceutical companies are constantly creating products designed to slow down the aging process in order to meet consumer demand.

There are many things a person can do to follow an anti-aging routine, and some of them are simpler than others. Topical products, combined with focusing on preventing aging from within, are an effective method to combat the aging process.

Anti-aging can be a difficult topic to address. A war is currently being fought over the meaning of “anti-aging” (as research, medicine, brand, or simply adjective) and thus even mentioning the term is likely to prejudice many readers. We will try to put this all into context while being as neutral as possible.

Preventing Aging of the Skin and Anti-aging Skin Care:

There has now been a range of anti-aging skin care products, techniques, therapies etc to combat skin damage and aging. The most common method of fighting aging skin is the use of antioxidants to destroy the “free radicals” that cause cellular degeneration. A diet rich in fresh fruit, vegetable and legumes, and food components such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta-carotene, and other enzymes are considered to be good source of antioxidants. Thousands of antioxidant supplements and pills are also now being produced by pharmaceutical companies around the world.

Experts also recommend a restricted diet of between 30 and 60 per cent less calories than normal, which increases life span, slows metabolism to reduced body fat causing less glycosylation and less oxidation.

Scientists are also experimenting with a range of Longevity Assurance Genes that protect against ageing. This experiment, if successful, may be able to completely reverse the aging of the human skin, brain and blood vessels.

Vitamins for anti Aging

Vitamin E: Experts consider vitamin E to be the most important antioxidant because it protects cell membranes and prevents damages to enzymes associated with them. Natural sources of vitamin E include vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, grains, oats, nuts, and dairy products.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is the most common antioxidant found in the skin. It’s also found in vegetables and citrus fruits. Like vitamin E, vitamin C is considered important in repairing free radicals and preventing them from becoming cancerous or accelerating the aging process.

Vitamin A, selenium (a mineral), and a group know as carotenoids – beta-carotene being the most popular and well know carotenoid. Carotenoids are the pigment compounds that give many fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors. Antioxidants are believed to be effective in helping to prevent cancer, heart disease, stroke and a variety of other ailments associated with natural aging. Specifically antioxidants prevent ailments by destroying free harmful radicals inside the human body.

Since vitamin C is most prevalent in the skin, the skin is the organ that suffers most from environmental stressors. Smoking, sun exposure, and pollution rob the nutrient from our bodies, says Burke.

Vitamin B2, coenzyme Q10, and cysteine (an amino acid). Herbs, such as grape seed, bilberry, turmeric (curcumin), ginkgo, milk thistle and green tea also contain powerful antioxidant compounds. Vitamin B2 is often taken as part of a B-complex supplement and included in many antioxidant vitamin formulas.

Most people are aware of the fact that vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are vital to enable your body to function properly. But not many people are aware of the fact that there are some vitamins that can contribute to healthy hair growth. For example, all of the group of B vitamins are essential for healthy hair growth. Whilst most people know that B vitamins will help to promote energy as well as healthy nervous system not many are aware of the impact of the B vitamins on the growth of healthy hair. Supplementing with B vitamins if you are experiencing some hair loss due to stress can help towards the re-growth of healthy hair. If you have a problem with hair growth and decide to supplement with a good quality B complex, don’t expect instant results. However, most people reported a difference in texture and thickness of their hair in around 30 days. So, be patient and you will see the difference.

Most of us are aware of the fact that supplementing your diet with vitamins can be extremely beneficial. Far too many of us are deficient in one or more vitamins and antioxidants and this can cause a number of different health issues. Although it may seem like enough to take an over-the-counter daily multivitamin, you need to understand that not all of these vitamins are created equally. It is important for you to buy good quality vitamins and antioxidants.

One of the most difficult things about supplementing with vitamins and antioxidants is choosing a reputable source that is going to give you everything that you need without including anything that you don’t. You might be surprised to learn that many of the vitamins that are available at the store are not going to be the healthiest thing for you. Some of them have been manipulated and stripped of some of the most important things which can be contained in the vitamins and antioxidants, at times even being turned into something that is of no use to you at all. Whenever you are trying to improve your health through supplementation, the last thing that you would want to do is to damage it in the process.

One of the most important things for you to look for in a vitamin supplier is an all-natural product. Make sure that absolutely everything that was included into the vitamin was put in there in order to benefit you. If there are only trace elements of what you need which are included in the vitamin, and the rest is filler, they are simply trying to sell you something in order to make a profit. Although all vitamin companies are in business to make a profit, there are certainly some that are more conscientious about the products that they supply.

The Internet has a wealth of information about this, and by doing a little bit of research, you can easily find the vitamins that are trustworthy. You may also try asking around, perhaps with your homeopathic doctor or somebody who has already looked into these things in depth. You would be surprised at the difference in your health when you begin to take good quality vitamins and antioxidants. It may take some time for you to discover the ones that you need, but the time spent will be well worth it once you see the improvements in your health.

If there is one thing that people have been fighting throughout the ages, it is the aging process. Just a simple look back through history will show you that people have been fixated on the aging process, from the ancient Chinese medicine which is still in use today, down to the search for the fountain of youth. You might be surprised to learn, however, that the fountain of youth may not be so far off from us. Provided you can do something that will reverse the process of aging in you as an individual, there’s no telling exactly how far you can take it. Taking a good supplement containing vitamins and antioxidants could go a long way to reversing the aging process.

The unfortunate thing is, we tend to be fighting against a foe that is around us in every area of the world. Not only do we have to combat this through the air pollution and water pollution in the environment, it also tends to enter into our body through the foods that we eat. Once these unnatural items enter into the body, it often causes a process of oxidation which releases free radicals into the body. The sole purpose of free radicals is to destroy us from the inside out. The best way for us to combat and perhaps even reverse this, is to do it from the source.

Since it is the oxidation process which releases these free radicals, having an antioxidant in our body is naturally going to stop this from occurring. These antioxidants exist in the world around us in a number of different forms, such as in foods that we can eat and also in some drinks. Some foods will contain a small amount of antioxidants, while some that are labelled super foods, will contain them in abundance. Some of the best things for you to eat in this regard include berries, broccoli, red grapes and garlic. There are also some other foods which are generally overlooked, such as raw cocoa nibs. Eating a few tablespoons of these on a daily basis can provide you with enough antioxidants to last you throughout the day.

Another thing that you may want to consider is drinking some form of natural juice on a daily basis that also contains an abundance of these antioxidants. Since the juice is going to be absorbed readily into the system, it can have almost an immediate effect. If you feel that you are not getting enough antioxidants in your diet, then you could take a good supplement containing vitamins and antioxidants. If you do these things regularly, you would be surprised how your health and your aging will be affected positively. Maybe reversing the aging process could be an added bonus when you consume enough vitamins and antioxidants.

Most of us are interested finding ways in order to achieve optimum health. Two of the things that we can do which will benefit us greatly is to make sure that we are getting enough vitamins and antioxidants in our daily diet. There are a number of different ways that we can do this, including eating specific foods which are full of these items as well as by supplementing in order to make up for any lack that our diet may contain. The health benefits of taking a good quality supplement containing vitamins and antioxidants will become evident, once you are doing it consistently. Until that time, however, it is good to know what you can expect.

Supplementing with vitamins and antioxidants is going to have a number of different benefits for your body, but it really depends on the problems that you are currently dealing with. For example, supplementing with plenty of vitamin C on a daily basis is going to help you to feel better in general, and will help to avoid illness in some cases. Another thing that vitamin C does, however, which tends to be out of the sight of humans is to help us to avoid a form of scurvy which can kill us. Although we don’t generally deal with scurvy as the sailors did centuries ago, we do still deal with it internally because of a deficiency in vitamin C. Many natural doctors feel that this could be a contributory factor in a lot of cases of heart attacks. If that is true, taking vitamin C on a daily basis may just save your life.

Of course, there are many other vitamins that have benefits for us as well. For example, vitamin D can help you to stay healthy. Taking vitamin B in healthy doses can not only help to lower your homocysteine levels, it may just take away some of your anxiety. It would really benefit you to look into what vitamins can help you for your particular problem. Most people are surprised with the differences that it makes.

Antioxidants help to clear the free radicals that are produced as a result of the natural oxidization that goes on inside of the body. Since these free radicals are responsible for cellular damage, they could create problems with our health as well as advancing the aging process. Regularly taking antioxidants may be the key to reducing many of these problems that you are experiencing.

When buying your vitamins and antioxidants, choose your supplier carefully and don’t just opt for the cheapest. Check labels and make sure that only natural ingredients are used.

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been known to protect the cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke, lowering blood pressure and even improve cholesterol levels. That’s a lot of power in one little group of micro-nutrients as it is but science has turned up evidence that the larger benefit from this group of fatty acids could be as a brain boosting super nutrient.

Omega-3s are called essential fatty acids because while they are necessary for optimal health, the body is incapable of producing them. Therefore, they must be obtained from what we eat. Foods that are the richest sources of these fats include certain fish like salmon, sardines and herring, as well as walnuts, flaxseed and canola oil. Other sources, while not as packed with the fats are still good sources and that includes shrimp, clams, cod and spinach.

Three main compounds make up the Omega-3 fats: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Since ALA actually is converted into the other two compounds in the body, the most important to watch for would be DHA and EPA. Those two are more readily utilized by the body.

Studies have been done with giving omega-3 supplements during pregnancy and then following the resulting infants until they were four years old. The children were consistently ahead of their peers who did not receive supplementation in utero. DHA, in particular, has been shown so beneficial to brain development that baby formula makers are including it in their formulas.

Many studies have been done and continue to be done on the effects of omega-3 supplements on the brain, both healthy and unhealthy. The compounds have been shown to improve depression and anxiety. In fact, tests were done an array of patients diagnosed with depression and found that they all had low levels of omega-3s. Since the fats are such an important part of nerve cell membranes, it is thought that the supplementation enabled the nerve cells to communicate more clearly with one another – crucial to proper mental health.

Several studies have been done to see what effect omega-3 levels may have on ADHD. They’ve consistently shown that the majority of diagnosed patients had lower levels of the fatty acids. One study gave 117 children with ADHD supplements of omega-3 fatty acids for three months. Over that time, the children showed significant improvements in spelling, reading and behavior.

Still other trials have been done to see if omega-3 supplements could prove beneficial for Alzheimer’s disease since that is primarily a disease affecting cognition and memory. Just as with the children with ADHD, it turns out that Alzheimer’s patients have low levels of omega-3 fatty acids. In the studies done thus far, there have been significant improvements in mental reasoning and memory function for early to moderate Alzheimer’s disease sufferers.

When you look at the best food sources of omega-3 fatty acids and compare it to the typical western diet, it is not surprising that a lack of these vital micro-nutrients has been theorized to correspond to the rising numbers of ADHD diagnoses and depression. Over the past fifty years, we have become more reliant on processed, refined food sources plus pollution has led to recommendations of not eating large amounts of most of the richest fish sources. Could the two be cause and effect?

Only time will tell.

If you look at the term antioxidant, you can likely figure out the roots of the word.

Anti meaning against and oxidant referring to oxygen and oxidization – antioxidant. Wait a minute – against oxygen? Don’t we need that to survive? Of course we do as oxygen is a large component of the air we breathe. However, the way our system is set up, the molecules of our cells become oxidized because of the oxygen intake causing one of the electrons to shake loose from the molecule. This makes the molecule become unstable and known as a free radical.

The worst thing about this whole situation is that just about everything contributes to this oxidization process so our body’s are pretty much constantly producing more free radicals. Air pollution, cigarette smoke (yours or someone else’s), alcohol, stress, even sun exposure all contribute to the process. Thankfully, nature herself has provided a countermeasure for all the damage caused by free radicals – antioxidants. These handy little nutrient compounds come along and donate a spare electron to the unstable molecule, turning it stable again.

The most amazing thing about antioxidants is that there are so very many of them and more are being discovered every day. Your body actually produces some antioxidants on its own while the rest need to be consumed through the food we eat. Some of the everyday vitamins and minerals that we’ve long known are necessary for optimal health turned out to have antioxidant properties like vitamin C and zinc. More, however, have been discovered as scientists discover and isolate substances in nutritional compounds. Things like flavonoids, lutein and resveratrol are all recent discoveries in antioxidant research.

Each antioxidant that is discovered has turned out to have other benefits, as well. Obviously, we knew that vitamins and minerals had other purposes within the body. Turns out so do all the other substances that have been discovered. Antioxidants can have anti-inflammatory properties, help keep arterial walls flexible and even prevent mutation at a cellular level.

No one antioxidant is the most important or valuable. Instead, research shows that antioxidants work together within the body to have more powerful abilities. Some combine to create a new antioxidant substance that isn’t present without the initial two substances getting together. Supplements of antioxidants that have other benefits, such as vitamin C with its immune boosting power, certainly won’t hurt you. However, you should be eating a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and grains in order to be getting full benefits from all the thousands of antioxidant micro-nutrients.

With all the media attention to the dangers of UV ray exposure in the past two decades, people are avoiding even small amounts of sun exposure. Of course, with the hectic lives that many of us lead now, many people simply don’t have time to be out enjoying the sunshine as they would have in past times. Most of us are aware now that UV rays can contribute to premature aging and skin cancer, but many are unaware of the side effect that seems to be rising from the anti-sun crusade: widespread deficiencies in vitamin D.

Severe vitamin D deficiencies can lead to major problems with bones. Vitamin D acts as a catalyst that helps maintain proper levels of both calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Both of these minerals are vital to strong, healthy bone tissue. This isn’t the only thing that vitamin D affects in the body, either. Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiencies can lead to depression, certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and diabetes. Is it any wonder that our rates of diabetes keep rising along with the craze to stay out of the sun? Seems rather a big coincidence.

Most vitamins and minerals have a standard recommended amount but that isn’t how vitamin D is measured. Instead, it is based on adequate intake value – the amount needed to maintain healthy bones. Like anything else, this amount has changed through the years as more is discovered about the vitamin and how it works in our bodies. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics doubled the recommended intake for children, from 200 IUs to 400 IUs.

The major hindrance to coming up with accurate recommendations is that scientists have still not discovered all the ways that vitamin D works within the body and since genetics play a role, the optimal amount is likely to vary from person to person. Since there are few food sources for vitamin D, most of us will get our vitamin D from the sun or through vitamin D enriched foods. However, many studies have shown that our bodies do not absorb vitamins added into foods as well as the natural versions.

The consensus among the medical community seems to be that if you think you might be deficient in vitamin D than take a supplement as it won’t hurt anything. Since anything up to 2,000 IUs daily has been shown to be safe, a supplement could be the case of better safe than sorry.
